Beauty Products We Love to Get Fancy and Festive with this Holiday Season

It’s hard to believe that the holidays are less than four weeks away! Besides getting together with friends and family, and finishing up that super long shopping list, taking the time to look good often becomes a chore instead of the fun and enjoyable thing it should be. Our brand new social media ambassador, Brittany Sarah, is here to add some inspiration to your holiday beauty line-up with some of her favourites below.

YSL Touche Eclat Le Teint

During the holiday season I love to put my best face forward, and this foundation helps me do that. It has a beautiful radiant glow that will give you a fresh dewy complexion. It is my go-to for a perfect medium coverage that still looks glowing and natural!

Hourglass Ambient Metallic Strobe Lighting Palette

Highlighter is always a good idea no matter what the season. But especially during the holidays I like to shine. This palette gives you endless colour options for that perfect glow! I like to put this on my cheekbones and on my shoulders and collar bones for that extra holiday party sparkle.

Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette

This eyeshadow palette is the perfect combination of matte shades and shimmer shades! You can make so many holiday looks with these colours. There is even a silver glitter metallic shade if you are feeling extra daring.

Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter + Glow Liquid Eyeshadow

The thing I love most about holiday glam is the glitter! Tis the season for glitter everywhere. Stila makes it so easy to perfect that glittery smokey eye. This is a liquid glitter so you don’t have to deal with any mess. Just apply on your lids and you are good to go!

Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint

Everyone is always looking for that perfect red lip during the holidays. Rihanna and her new makeup line Fenty Beauty has created a universal red that is perfect for every person! It comes in a very long lasting matte formula.

Natasha Denona Chroma Crystal Top Coat

f you are not quite ready for glitter but still want that pop of sparkle on your eyes then this is the product for you! These Crystal Top Coats add the perfect slight glow to your lids. They are so easy to apply over shadows or on their own. You can even use your fingers to apply!

Becca Liquid Crystal Lip Topper Glow Gloss in ‘Champagne Dreams X Bellini

Keeping with the sparkle theme, these new lip glosses from Becca are perfect for the holidays! They are great glosses but add a sparkly almost holographic shine to the lips. They come in many colours but I personally love this peachy nude that has pink glitter throughout. Just adds a little something extra to the lips.

IGK Pre Party Hair Strobing Glitter Spray

Glitter Hairspray may make you feel like you are back in the 80’s but IGK is bringing it back in the perfect way. This is a glitter spray for your hair that if used sparingly adds the perfect amount of shine and sparkle to your hair without looking over done. Perfect for NYE! Unfortunately, this product is so popular that it’s currently sold out! But make sure to keep checking their site for new stock.

Velour Lashes in ‘Fluff n’ Wispie’

If you don’t normally wear falsies then the holidays are the perfect time to add that extra glam! I love these ones by Velour because you can re-use them (for all of the parties this season!) and they are so fluffy and wispy which is totally on trend!

Replica ‘By The Fireplace’ Perfume

This is my current favourite fragrance! It is so perfect for winter and the holidays. It combines smoky and woody accords with the subtle sweetness of chestnut to evoke a familiar but forgotten moment—the warmth of a cozy fireplace in midwinter. It smells sexy and elegant and exactly like the holidays!

——————-

Unfortunately, far too often the real meaning of the holiday season is lost among the stress and chaos of trying to do it all.  So don’t forget to take the time to slow down, relax and pamper yourself with any of the above suggestions this holiday season!

False lashes: Synthetic, faux mink or authentic mink?

False lashes as a beauty tool

Did you know that the use of false lashes as a beauty tool dates back to the early 1900s? It’s no surprise that with the advent of motion pictures and the wider use of photographs, that false lashes would also become more popular. Long, dark eyelashes go a long way in accentuating the eyes and making them stand out, especially in photographs. In fact, it was the filmmaker D.W. Griffith who decided in 1916, that the actress in his film Intolerance needed to have “eyelashes brushing [her] cheeks.” Unfortunately, they did not have all the beauty tools (or knowledge) that Fancy Face artists have now, and the poor actress had her false lashes glued on with spirit gum by Mr. Griffith’s wigmaker. Spirit gum is definitely not what one should be using on one’s eyelids, and it was reported that the poor actress came to the studio one morning “with her eyes swollen nearly shut.” It is not clear what happened to her, but it certainly did not prevent the use of false eyelashes, and by 1921, all manner of actresses were using them regularly.

Ouch! Aren’t you glad that we have the amazing Fancy Face team to do this now?

One lucky actress who likely did not need to wear false lashes was the incomparable Elizabeth Taylor. She was born with a rare genetic mutation that gave her two rows of eyelashes, which only enhanced her already stunning violet-blue eyes. Unfortunately not all of us are Elizabeth Taylors, but fortunately, we can rest easy knowing that false lashes have come a long way from spirit gum in 1916.

The lashes that are available to us now are much lighter, easier to wear and more natural-looking. Here we will look at the types of false lashes that the Fancy Face makeup team uses.

Synthetic, faux mink or authentic mink?

No I am not talking about your next fall coat. These are some of the different types of false lashes that are in use right now. They differ in quality and price, but authentic mink is generally thought of as the best choice if you want the most sensuous, natural look.

Synthetic

These are the least expensive kind and the lowest quality out of the three. They are made with plastic fibres, have stubbier ends and are much thicker than normal human lashes, making them look more unnatural. They are also quite heavy and thus slightly uncomfortable to wear.

Faux mink

These are man-made poly-fiber lashes that are meant to imitate real, authentic mink hair. They are quite popular because they are lighter than the first option, hence more comfortable and natural-looking than synthetic lashes, and generally less expensive than authentic mink lashes.

Authentic mink

Made from the mink tail of the Siberian or Chinese mink. The advantages are that they last longer and are very light, allowing you to apply several extensions on your natural lash. Authentic mink hair simply achieves that natural look that synthetic and faux mink lashes just cannot create. The disadvantages of authentic mink lashes are that they do not come naturally curled, therefore they must be continually curled by the wearer. They also tend to be more expensive, some can cost up to $300 for a really high-end pair.

Authentic mink lashes from Lady Lash Club

Lady Lash Club is Fancy Face Inc.’s mink lash supplier, and also a Canadian-based company that uses only cruelty-free mink lashes. Even though they are an excellent beauty tool, mink lashes still come from a living creature, and as such, it is important to ensure that the production of these lashes is done in as humane a way as possible. Cruelty-free animal products are of high importance to Fancy Face Inc., which is why we chose Lady Lash Club. They have sourced manufacturers who guarantee that their mink hair fibres are collected when brushing the minks’ fur during shedding seasons, thus the removal of these hairs do not harm the animals. The manufacturers also only use minks from local free-range zoos.

The Seductive lash style

The usual disadvantages of authentic mink lashes also do not apply to Lady Lash Club lashes. The Club offers a unique monthly subscription service that delivers four pairs of lashes directly to your door for the very reasonable price of $24.99 CDN a month. There are many different styles of lashes to choose from, including Seductive (pictured above), Mischievous and Allure. For those who enjoy variety, the styles may be changed up to 10 days before the next delivery date. There is also an option to cancel anytime in case you decide to take a break from looking glamourous.

To change the naturally straight nature of the authentic mink hair, the lashes are given a perm that creates a long-lasting curl. At the moment, Lady Lash Club only offers strip lashes, which aren’t normally worn to bed, and thus aren’t as likely to lose their shape compared to individual lashes. The lifespan of these authentic mink strip lashes depends on how well one takes care of them. With proper care they can easily last up to 10 to 20 wears!

A Celebration of Canadian Beauty – 150th Canada’s Day Edition

You might have heard the small piece of news recently that Canada just turned 150 years old. Well, if you somehow managed to miss all the splendor and celebration surrounding our Nation’s milestone birthday, fret not, for Fancy Face Inc. has decided to recognize Canada Day in our own glamourous way.

When discussing famous makeup brands, usually European makeup companies spring to mind. However, there have been an increasing number of home-grown brands gaining traction in the industry. For our Canada’s Day edition, we have rounded up six significant Canadian brands that should be on your beauty radar.

NUDESTIX

The Basics:

Founded and headed by an energetic mother and (two) daughters combo, they adhere to a less-is-more philosophy when it comes to your makeup kit. All the products are pencil or stick-based and come in cute, handy packaging complete with sharpener, mirror and instructions.

The Canadian-connection:

Launched in May 2014 by mom and company president Jenny Frankel, a chemical engineer. Frankel once worked at MAC Cosmetics and was also a co-founder of Cover FX Makeup, another Canadian makeup brand. The company is still based in Canada, with its headquarters located in north Toronto.

The Must-have:

Nudies All Over Face Color Matte: A highly-rated multitasker that has a soft color balm on one side and a blending brush on the other. It provides natural soft colour for the eyes, cheeks and lips.

BITE BEAUTY

The Basics:

This lipstick-centered brand is known for its food-grade (a.k.a. edible) ingredients. It is a relatively young company, but there is already lots of media buzz surrounding its products. Their signature six products of a lip pencil, lipstick, lip crayon, lip balm, lip scrub and liquefied lipstick combine to give you the perfect kissable lips.

The Canadian-Connection:

Founded by Torontonian Susanne Langmuir in 2013, the company hand makes all their products in a very cool-looking factory in Toronto, Ontario. In fact, there’s even a movie-trailer worthy video of how their lipsticks are made on their website.

The Must-haves:

All of their products look enticing, but their Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Kimchi is definitely worth a look as it won the Nylon 2016 Beauty Hit List award for Best Pink Lipstick. Also worth a trip is their Lip Lab on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto, where you can design your own custom lip colour.

ILIA

The Basics:

Using natural and organic ingredients, this line focuses on delivering ethically and sustainably produced cosmetics with a focus on lip care. Each product contains certified organic bio-active botanicals that are meant to pretty you up while nourishing and rejuvenating your skin at the same time.

The Canadian-Connection:

Even though the brand is now based in Los Angeles, ILIA was first launched in 2011 in Vancouver, Canada, where the founder, Sasha Plavsic was born and raised. The first collection in 2011 consisted only of six Tinted Lip Conditioners, but rapidly grew to forty pieces in less than two years, and is now available in over 15 countries.

The Must-have:

The minimal yet stunning packaging can be reason alone to own any piece of this line, but since this brand was founded on Tinted Lip Conditioners, it is not surprising that these earn the most praise. Try the Crimson & Clover shade when you want a red lip that doesn’t look too overdone.

LISE WATIER

The Basics:

Encompassing a wide range of products that covers makeup, skincare and fragrance, it became the largest Canadian company in the beauty industry after its merger with Groupe Marcelle Inc. in early 2016.

The Canadian-connection:

Like the nation it is based in, Lise Watier Cosmetics is also celebrating a milestone birthday this year. Founded in Quebec by the pioneering Madame Watier in 1972, this brand is celebrating its 45th year as a leader in the cosmetic industry. Another piece of its Canadian identity can be found in the brand’s heavy use of Canadian flora in its products, such as the Labrador tea. The Labrador tea extract has been combined with other ingredients to create a highly efficient anti-aging complex.

The Must-have:

Portfolio Professional Correctors:  This award-winning concealer has been a fan-favourite for over fifteen years; its unique palette combats five common problems, helping countless users achieve the perfect complexion.

LOCKS & MANE

The Basics:

Used and loved by the Fancy Face Inc. team, Locks & Mane is a Toronto-based hair extensions company that offers high quality natural hair extension clip-ins and semi-permanent hair extensions. Their product list isn’t long, but they are high on quality. Like they say on their website, “we believe in doing one thing well – like, really well.”

The Canadian-connection:

Founder and CEO Jennifer Parrott came up with the idea of offering fast and affordable extensions in a luxurious downtown Toronto studio space after spending eight years and thousands of dollars on hair extensions. That studio space is now Locks & Mane’s location on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto.

The Must-have:

Contact Tiffany at tiffany@fancyface.ca to book your own custom colour-match appointment in the Fancy Face Inc. studio, and get that voluminous look you always dreamed about!

LADY LASH CLUB

The Basics:

Love false lashes but tired of wasting time looking for quality lashes? Look no further than this company, which came up with the ingenious concept of delivering four pairs of cruelty-free mink eyelashes to your door every month. For those who hate commitment, there’s also an option to cancel anytime or change the lash styles up to 10 days prior to your next delivery date.

The Canadian-connection:

They are a fairly new company, having only started in 2015 out of Coquitlam, near Vancouver in British Columbia. Although they are based in Canada, their lashes are shipped world-wide.
