A Celebration of Canadian Beauty – 150th Canada’s Day Edition

You might have heard the small piece of news recently that Canada just turned 150 years old. Well, if you somehow managed to miss all the splendor and celebration surrounding our Nation’s milestone birthday, fret not, for Fancy Face Inc. has decided to recognize Canada Day in our own glamourous way.

When discussing famous makeup brands, usually European makeup companies spring to mind. However, there have been an increasing number of home-grown brands gaining traction in the industry. For our Canada’s Day edition, we have rounded up six significant Canadian brands that should be on your beauty radar.

NUDESTIX

The Basics:

Founded and headed by an energetic mother and (two) daughters combo, they adhere to a less-is-more philosophy when it comes to your makeup kit. All the products are pencil or stick-based and come in cute, handy packaging complete with sharpener, mirror and instructions.

The Canadian-connection:

Launched in May 2014 by mom and company president Jenny Frankel, a chemical engineer. Frankel once worked at MAC Cosmetics and was also a co-founder of Cover FX Makeup, another Canadian makeup brand. The company is still based in Canada, with its headquarters located in north Toronto.

The Must-have:

Nudies All Over Face Color Matte: A highly-rated multitasker that has a soft color balm on one side and a blending brush on the other. It provides natural soft colour for the eyes, cheeks and lips.

BITE BEAUTY

The Basics:

This lipstick-centered brand is known for its food-grade (a.k.a. edible) ingredients. It is a relatively young company, but there is already lots of media buzz surrounding its products. Their signature six products of a lip pencil, lipstick, lip crayon, lip balm, lip scrub and liquefied lipstick combine to give you the perfect kissable lips.

The Canadian-Connection:

Founded by Torontonian Susanne Langmuir in 2013, the company hand makes all their products in a very cool-looking factory in Toronto, Ontario. In fact, there’s even a movie-trailer worthy video of how their lipsticks are made on their website.

The Must-haves:

All of their products look enticing, but their Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Kimchi is definitely worth a look as it won the Nylon 2016 Beauty Hit List award for Best Pink Lipstick. Also worth a trip is their Lip Lab on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto, where you can design your own custom lip colour.

ILIA

The Basics:

Using natural and organic ingredients, this line focuses on delivering ethically and sustainably produced cosmetics with a focus on lip care. Each product contains certified organic bio-active botanicals that are meant to pretty you up while nourishing and rejuvenating your skin at the same time.

The Canadian-Connection:

Even though the brand is now based in Los Angeles, ILIA was first launched in 2011 in Vancouver, Canada, where the founder, Sasha Plavsic was born and raised. The first collection in 2011 consisted only of six Tinted Lip Conditioners, but rapidly grew to forty pieces in less than two years, and is now available in over 15 countries.

The Must-have:

The minimal yet stunning packaging can be reason alone to own any piece of this line, but since this brand was founded on Tinted Lip Conditioners, it is not surprising that these earn the most praise. Try the Crimson & Clover shade when you want a red lip that doesn’t look too overdone.

LISE WATIER

The Basics:

Encompassing a wide range of products that covers makeup, skincare and fragrance, it became the largest Canadian company in the beauty industry after its merger with Groupe Marcelle Inc. in early 2016.

The Canadian-connection:

Like the nation it is based in, Lise Watier Cosmetics is also celebrating a milestone birthday this year. Founded in Quebec by the pioneering Madame Watier in 1972, this brand is celebrating its 45th year as a leader in the cosmetic industry. Another piece of its Canadian identity can be found in the brand’s heavy use of Canadian flora in its products, such as the Labrador tea. The Labrador tea extract has been combined with other ingredients to create a highly efficient anti-aging complex.

The Must-have:

Portfolio Professional Correctors:  This award-winning concealer has been a fan-favourite for over fifteen years; its unique palette combats five common problems, helping countless users achieve the perfect complexion.

LOCKS & MANE

The Basics:

Used and loved by the Fancy Face Inc. team, Locks & Mane is a Toronto-based hair extensions company that offers high quality natural hair extension clip-ins and semi-permanent hair extensions. Their product list isn’t long, but they are high on quality. Like they say on their website, “we believe in doing one thing well – like, really well.”

The Canadian-connection:

Founder and CEO Jennifer Parrott came up with the idea of offering fast and affordable extensions in a luxurious downtown Toronto studio space after spending eight years and thousands of dollars on hair extensions. That studio space is now Locks & Mane’s location on Queen Street West in downtown Toronto.

The Must-have:

Contact Tiffany at tiffany@fancyface.ca to book your own custom colour-match appointment in the Fancy Face Inc. studio, and get that voluminous look you always dreamed about!

LADY LASH CLUB

The Basics:

Love false lashes but tired of wasting time looking for quality lashes? Look no further than this company, which came up with the ingenious concept of delivering four pairs of cruelty-free mink eyelashes to your door every month. For those who hate commitment, there’s also an option to cancel anytime or change the lash styles up to 10 days prior to your next delivery date.

The Canadian-connection:

They are a fairly new company, having only started in 2015 out of Coquitlam, near Vancouver in British Columbia. Although they are based in Canada, their lashes are shipped world-wide.

Fancy Face Bride Feature – Julia and Mike

Julia was one of our beautiful brides from summer 2016! She hired Brittany Gray and Allyssa of Fancy Face Inc. to glam her and her bridal party up for the big day. We truly enjoyed working with her and look forward to seeing her again this summer for her best friend’s wedding!

Scroll down to read more about her big day and to see some of our favourite shots!

How did you and your husband meet?

I met my husband in grade 11 of high school. We started off as just
friends with a common interest in the dramatic arts. Academically and
socially, we were and are, totally opposites. Mike was into math and
science and is somewhat introverted, while I excelled in the arts and
was very much a social person. I guess what they say about opposites
attracting is true! To this day, he still has a very calm, more
laid-back demeanor, whereas my personality is of a person who is
always on the go. We went to York University together and then once I
became a teacher for the York Catholic District School Board, Mike
carried on in his education at the University of Toronto, where he
graduated as a Pharmacist. After almost 8 years of dating, Mike asked
me to marry him on May 3, 2014 and we got married two years later on
July 9, 2016. We are currently awaiting the next very exciting chapter
of our journey together, which is fast approaching: we will be moving
into our new home in about a months time.

How did you choose your wedding day hair and makeup look?

My vision of my wedding and how I would look, very much changed over
the years from when I was a little girl. I think we all start off
wanting to look like the princess brides that we saw in our Disney
films when we were little. But as I started to plan our wedding with
Mike, I realized that that look did not fit me exactly. More than
anything else, I did not want my hair and make-up to transform me into
a version of me that was unrecognizable. I wanted my makeup and hair
to yes, make a statement, but I wanted it to compliment me as a person
and the feel of our wedding. Knowing soft colours and pinks look the
best with me I sought something in that palette. Ironically, I came
across my wedding makeup from the FancyFace Instagram. After looking
at dozens of pictures, magazines and Pinterest accounts, I decided on
a soft, dusty-rose for lip and soft colours on my eyes, with dramatic
lashes for a bit of flare. Brittany Gray was AMAZING at my makeup
trial. We talked about different colours that would compliment my skin
tone, any concerns I had about my skin and put together a
comprehensive palette that gave me an amazing overall look. Brittany’s
knowledge of makeup is out of this world and she’s a great girl to
work with. For my hair, again, I didn’t want anything that was too
overdone or over the top. I wanted something soft, but a little bit
more on the classic side. The soft, more structured wave was perfect
as I was worried about the July weather interacting with my natural
crazy curly hair. For the night, throwing my hair up in a large low
bun was great! It allowed me to still have a beautiful hair style
without having my hair get messy from partying! Maurizio and David
from Mink Hair Lounge did an amazing job, working with me both in the
morning and at the reception hall to give me two, very different,
flawless looks!

What was the most memorable moment of the day?

Ahh! So many memorable parts. As I bride, I really wanted to be
present in my day. It is so easy to get caught up in the schedules,
the time constraints and let the day pass you by. I tried very hard to
be present throughout the whole day so that I was actually AT my own
wedding. But, I guess one of the MOST memorable parts of the day was
after leaving the wedding ceremony, Mike and I took a car, just us
two, without our family or bridal party, and had some pictures taken.
But in the transition of leaving our Church and arriving at the photo
shoot location, it was just us two. We had the opportunity to talk, to
soak it all in, to share what our mornings had been like—mine having
started very early at 3am and a little more hectic than his—it gave
us time to celebrate us on our own and realize that finally…after so
many years of being together, we were finally husband and wife. It
definitely hit us and we were so excited that it finally was here! I
loved seeing him at the Church, interacting with my niece and nephew,
I loved our reception, but I loved being with just him more. At the
end of the day, our wedding was about us in the past, present and the
future…and that day made the future possible and exciting!
As a side note, my second most favourite part of the day….the car
ride to the hotel, The Park Hyatt on Avenue Road, after the
reception…the day was done, and everything was so beautiful and went
off without a problem! We loved our day, but were happy that the
planning was over…and who wouldn’t be when we were leaving for
London, France and Italy the next day for almost a month!!!

How was your experience with Fancy Face Inc.?

I first heard about Fancy Face Inc. at the Wedluxe show in 2014. I met
Brittany there and we immediately started chatting and from that
moment I knew that I could trust her to do my bridal makeup and was
excited to learn more about the services offered by Fancy Face. From
there I contacted Tiffany at Fancy Face and she was great! She helped
me to book Brittany G. and Alyssa for makeup for myself, my girls, my
mother and my mother-in-law. Tiffany was prompt, explained everything
in detail, helped me book my make-up trial and helped me to arrange my
morning and budget time to ensure everyone would have their make-up
done in time for pictures.
On the actually day of my wedding, a very pregnant Brittany G and
Alyssa were at my house at an early 6am. The girls were super
organized and ready to go. Everybody in my party felt at ease with
them and we all just had a fun time, despite having been up for hours
already for hair. Brittany G and Alyssa were constant professionals,
but made it also feel like it was just a bunch of the girls getting
together and preparing for an awesome day! They were efficient and
time conscious having to do 7 people within a 2 hour span and even
though that may sound like a short amount of time, ALL of our make-up
was done to perfection! I received so many compliments on all our
make-up, that not only looked beautiful and flawless in the morning,
but looked beautiful and flawless at 1 am the next day! I couldn’t
have asked to work with better people, to have had a better experience
nor would have looked any better with another company. I would and
have recommend Fancy Face to anyone looking for reputable make-up
artists—I’ll be seeing the girls at Fancy Face Inc. this June for my
best friends wedding, who was in my wedding party and is now using
them for her own wedding. Further, whenever I need my make-up done
again in the future, the girls at Fancy Face Inc. will be the girls I
will call!! A heartfelt thank you to Brittany G and Alyssa—you girls
made my morning great and made me and my girls look absolutely
beautiful! There are no words to say to thank you…you are amazing
artists and truly at the top of your trade! Looking back at my
pictures, I am so thankful to you both–I’ll be able to look at this
pictures for years to come, and maybe show them to my kids, and show
them how beautiful we all looked and that was because of the two of
you! Much love to you fab girls!

NICHE SPRING STYLE ISSUE 2017

Well, another season, another “What’s In My Bag?’ beauty article for Niche Magazine! I absolutely love contributing to this magazine because they cover the “oh, so glamorous”!!! This season, for the Spring Style Issue, I’m sharing some new favourites that I’ve come to love since the previous winter season! I am always scouring Sephora, Holt Renfrew, Nordstom and Saks for the latest and greatest in makeup and skincare. It’s my absolute passion through and through!! I also love to visit Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall as well, to stay on the “up & up” in regards to high-performance drug-store quality beauty products too! As a beauty expert & owner of Fancy Face Inc., you really have to learn & be open to it all.

The products I’ve chosen this month range from haircare, to skincare to, of course (my favourite) MAKEUP!! These 6 products have become staples in my current beauty regime & have all been added to my professional kit as well. Great for the everyday woman and also the budding or professional makeup artist/hairstylist. Enjoy!!! xoxo
