Bridal Hair Jewellery

The perfect dress and makeup are undoubtedly two things at the top of every bride’s wishlist, but a bride’s look is not complete until she finds the perfect hairstyle…plus the all-important shiny pieces to bring the whole look together.

Here we talk about the essential pieces of bridal hair jewellery.

The Veil

Yes, it’s not technically jewellery, but how can we discuss bridal hair and fashion without mentioning the most iconic piece that a bride wears on her wedding day. I know some people may choose to forgo a veil nowadays, but your wedding day is basically the only time you can wear a veil without looking weird. So go ahead and wear one if you want!

This stunning Amanie Pearl Veil from Blair Nadeau should be all the reason you need to wear a veil, and it is simply too breathtaking to not mention on this blog! The jewels in this veil come courtesy of the hundreds of Preciosa pearls, which are hand applied on this single tier non gathered mantilla style French tulle veil.

The Hair Comb

When wearing a veil, it’s a good idea to keep your hairstyle and accessories somewhat simple to keep your look from becoming too cluttered.  Either of these jeweled stunners from Kleinfeld would be a perfect complement to wear under a veil. They manage to add some sparkle without stealing the show away from the veil.

The hair comb can also be worn alone without a veil and pairs especially well with a side-swept hair style.

The Crown or Tiara

Even though your veil may be too beautiful to take off, you might want to for the reception just so you have an excuse to wear another piece of jewellery. If you do plan on taking it off, make sure you have someone (preferably one of our stylists) on hand to help you remove the veil correctly and re-position your hair style and hair accessories if necessary. Your hairstyle might get ruined if the veil isn’t taken off carefully and correctly.

Why not replace the veil with something even more dramatic like this Adeline Gold Starburst Crown? Adhering to the 2017 collection’s celestial theme perfectly, this crown contains a variety of differently-sized starbursts that are hand painted and finished with a shimmery iridescent coating, and of course a few Swarovski pearls and crystals.

Or perhaps you are a Games of Thrones fan? This medieval-inspired crown made of golden brass stamped filigree medallions will have you feeling like the Queen on the Iron Throne at your wedding, but we all know how infamous weddings are in Westeros…

The Headband

Wearing a bejeweled headband certainly makes for a bold and unique fashion statement. Similar to the crown or tiara discussed above, headbands, or diadems as they were called in ancient Greece, also signified royalty in some ancient cultures. Feel like a princess in one of these delicate creations by Elsa Corsi.

The Sarah Halo headband features three round clusters of Swarovski Crystal with Vintage Rose cushion cut center stones that are meant to rest on your forehead, as well as a double layer of crystals that swags at the back, making it as beautiful from the front as it is from the back.

The Tina headband features a striking lattice design of marquise flowers in the front, which can be worn directly on the forehead or higher up on the crown.  Powerful and feminine at the same time, we’d like to imagine that this stunning piece is what Wonder Woman would wear on her wedding day.

The Look from Behind

You want to ensure that your guests will have something to dazzle them during your long walk down the aisle, and for part of the ceremony as well. This understated string of Swarovski Crystals from Elsa Corsi gives you the circlet look from behind without committing to the whole crown. It’s the perfect look for brides who opt to wear their hair down.

Jeweled Hair Swag

The Flower Girl

Don’t let the cute flower girls be the only ones who get flowers. Flowers tucked behind the ears instantly evoke feelings of carefree days in the sun. Bring a bit of the beach into your wedding day by adorning your hair with silk flowers, which are just as beautiful as and more enduring than the real thing.

This Flora Silk Flower Hair Comb is made from the Peau de Soie silk, the ‘queen of all silk’. Each of the three beautifully crafted blooms are hand pressed using traditional millinery irons, and in the center of each lies a beautiful hand wired Swarovski crystal and pearl stamens. The perfect complement for a side-swept do.

Remember, if you can’t choose just one piece to wear, then change it up! Wear one during the ceremony and reserve the more dramatic piece for the reception, when it’s time to let your hair down and party.

False lashes: Synthetic, faux mink or authentic mink?

False lashes as a beauty tool

Did you know that the use of false lashes as a beauty tool dates back to the early 1900s? It’s no surprise that with the advent of motion pictures and the wider use of photographs, that false lashes would also become more popular. Long, dark eyelashes go a long way in accentuating the eyes and making them stand out, especially in photographs. In fact, it was the filmmaker D.W. Griffith who decided in 1916, that the actress in his film Intolerance needed to have “eyelashes brushing [her] cheeks.” Unfortunately, they did not have all the beauty tools (or knowledge) that Fancy Face artists have now, and the poor actress had her false lashes glued on with spirit gum by Mr. Griffith’s wigmaker. Spirit gum is definitely not what one should be using on one’s eyelids, and it was reported that the poor actress came to the studio one morning “with her eyes swollen nearly shut.” It is not clear what happened to her, but it certainly did not prevent the use of false eyelashes, and by 1921, all manner of actresses were using them regularly.

Ouch! Aren’t you glad that we have the amazing Fancy Face team to do this now?

One lucky actress who likely did not need to wear false lashes was the incomparable Elizabeth Taylor. She was born with a rare genetic mutation that gave her two rows of eyelashes, which only enhanced her already stunning violet-blue eyes. Unfortunately not all of us are Elizabeth Taylors, but fortunately, we can rest easy knowing that false lashes have come a long way from spirit gum in 1916.

The lashes that are available to us now are much lighter, easier to wear and more natural-looking. Here we will look at the types of false lashes that the Fancy Face makeup team uses.

Synthetic, faux mink or authentic mink?

No I am not talking about your next fall coat. These are some of the different types of false lashes that are in use right now. They differ in quality and price, but authentic mink is generally thought of as the best choice if you want the most sensuous, natural look.

Synthetic

These are the least expensive kind and the lowest quality out of the three. They are made with plastic fibres, have stubbier ends and are much thicker than normal human lashes, making them look more unnatural. They are also quite heavy and thus slightly uncomfortable to wear.

Faux mink

These are man-made poly-fiber lashes that are meant to imitate real, authentic mink hair. They are quite popular because they are lighter than the first option, hence more comfortable and natural-looking than synthetic lashes, and generally less expensive than authentic mink lashes.

Authentic mink

Made from the mink tail of the Siberian or Chinese mink. The advantages are that they last longer and are very light, allowing you to apply several extensions on your natural lash. Authentic mink hair simply achieves that natural look that synthetic and faux mink lashes just cannot create. The disadvantages of authentic mink lashes are that they do not come naturally curled, therefore they must be continually curled by the wearer. They also tend to be more expensive, some can cost up to $300 for a really high-end pair.

Authentic mink lashes from Lady Lash Club

Lady Lash Club is Fancy Face Inc.’s mink lash supplier, and also a Canadian-based company that uses only cruelty-free mink lashes. Even though they are an excellent beauty tool, mink lashes still come from a living creature, and as such, it is important to ensure that the production of these lashes is done in as humane a way as possible. Cruelty-free animal products are of high importance to Fancy Face Inc., which is why we chose Lady Lash Club. They have sourced manufacturers who guarantee that their mink hair fibres are collected when brushing the minks’ fur during shedding seasons, thus the removal of these hairs do not harm the animals. The manufacturers also only use minks from local free-range zoos.

The Seductive lash style

The usual disadvantages of authentic mink lashes also do not apply to Lady Lash Club lashes. The Club offers a unique monthly subscription service that delivers four pairs of lashes directly to your door for the very reasonable price of $24.99 CDN a month. There are many different styles of lashes to choose from, including Seductive (pictured above), Mischievous and Allure. For those who enjoy variety, the styles may be changed up to 10 days before the next delivery date. There is also an option to cancel anytime in case you decide to take a break from looking glamourous.

To change the naturally straight nature of the authentic mink hair, the lashes are given a perm that creates a long-lasting curl. At the moment, Lady Lash Club only offers strip lashes, which aren’t normally worn to bed, and thus aren’t as likely to lose their shape compared to individual lashes. The lifespan of these authentic mink strip lashes depends on how well one takes care of them. With proper care they can easily last up to 10 to 20 wears!

Top 10 Beauty Products to Beat the Summer Heat

How did you celebrate the official start of summer on June 21st? I was lucky enough to be in Vancouver this year and it was a rare sunny day in this lovely city. As a country that gets more cold days than hot, who can blame Canadians for wanting to soak up every bit of sunshine any chance they get? Unfortunately, the arrival of hot and sunny weather also means the appearance of high humidity and heat that can wreak havoc on perfectly set hair and make-up. Whether you are celebrating your big day as a bride, a bridesmaid or just being your regular awesome self, here are some products to ensure that you can enjoy every bit of summer while looking your absolute best!

Skin Care

Unisex Healthy Glow Tinted Moisturizer (Charlotte Tilbury): Can’t wait to get that healthy summer glow? Get a head start by slathering on this hydrating tinted moisturizer that contains natural tan pigments, that will help you transition your skin from spring to summer. In fact, you may choose to omit using foundation all together since this moisturizer is tinted. Sometimes less is more, especially during the humid summer months!

Clarifying Mask (Murad): Remove all the dirt and sweat built up from your crazy summer adventures by using a mask every week. This Murad mask removes impurities deep within the skin, and can minimize breakouts and acne, all of which are more common during the hotter summer months due to sweat (and beach parties).

Makeup

Even Better Makeup SPF 15 (Clinique): Prolonged sun exposure can sometimes create dark spots (also called age spots) on your skin. Since we spend more time outside during the summer, it is important to wear sunscreen that is also oil-free and lightweight to prevent too much sweat and product from clogging our pores. This top-selling Clinique liquid foundation does all of the above. It contains SPF 15, is oil-free and is even specially formulated to improve skin tone over prolonged use. It glides on easily and does not feel greasy or too heavy in the hot weather, and the SPF also helps to prevent future age spots.

The POREfessional Face Primer (Benefit Cosmetics): Your makeup should always stay pristine whether you are going for drinks on a patio or running around the beach. So don’t let sweat and humidity ruin the day by making your makeup run. Putting on a primer before you apply makeup can ensure that your makeup stays put and not smudged throughout the day. An added bonus is that this primer drastically minimizes the appearance of imperfections and pores, cutting down on the need for heavy foundation or powder.

Soleil Eye and Cheek Palette (Tom Ford): Not only are the shades in this palette the perfect complement to sun-kissed skin, but the ivory and gold-trimmed case also brings to mind glamourous summer getaways. The four eye shadows, highlighter and blush in this palette come in two different colour waves, that of sultry, bronzed warmth or sweet, incandescent cool.

Rouge Dior Lipstick (Dior): Nowadays, matte lipstick seems to be the flavor du jour. Diversify your arsenal with this highly pigmented couture matte finish lipstick from Dior in the gorgeous 999 shade, which is the iconic perfect red of House Dior. Wear it for your bachelorette party and you’ll be guaranteed to turn heads.

Set + Refresh Perfecting Makeup Mist (Estée Lauder): Sweat can smudge perfectly applied makeup. Use this spray before applying makeup to help it set and reapply throughout the day to immediately revive skin and create a fresh dewy glow. This face spray is also a great way to cool down and feel refreshed when the temperature rises.

Blotting Papers (Sephora Collection): To keep your face looking fresh and shine-free, always keep a packet of these in your bag. They are the perfect tool for long road trips or hikes as they remove excess oil and sweat while leaving your make-up in place. The herbal rose version is even softly scented to give you the perfect floral pick-me-up when you need it.

Hair

Surf Spray (Bumble and Bumble) – A perennial favourite among those of us not lucky enough to live next to the ocean. This spray can make you look like you just spent the entire day at the beach instead of slaving away in your air-conditioned cubicle. Use it to get a head start on the perfect summer-day hairstyle.

Shampure Dry Shampoo & Shampure Thermal Dry Conditioner (Aveda): Is the summer heat making your hair greasier than usual, but you’d rather not wash it every day? Dry shampoo and dry conditioner can work wonders in stretching out the ‘just washed’ look during days of high humidity when you are short on time.
