Hey, beauties! With temperatures soaring, I was thrilled to return to Cityline and chat about my top tips to achieve sweatproof beauty this summer.
Sweatproof Skincare Base
The first step to guarantee sweatproof beauty is a lightweight but also deeply nourishing skincare base. My fave is our Poetry In Potion and Daydream cream, which is super soothing and cooling during these hot summer months. Make sure to apply your skincare at least 15-20 minutes prior to your makeup to give it enough time to seep in.
Next, apply your protective SPF. I love Supergoop Glowscreen SPF 40, which is reef safe and clean. With its lightweight, pearlescent formula, it hydrates while also acting as a luminous, makeup-gripping primer. Sweatproof doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your gorgeous glow, beauties!
Did you know setting spray can act as a temperature control shield underneath your make-up? That’s why I apply it both before and after makeup to ensure a flawless finish and add some waterproofing protection. My go-to’s are Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray and our lavender-scented Forever Fancy Finishing Mist.
Tips for scorching hot days
On really hot days, I’d recommend adding a small amount of primer to your skin before applying your makeup–but only a very thin layer or you may have pilling, which is the opposite of what you want. I recommend Tatcha’s Silk Canvas protective primer for dry and dehydrated skin and the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer for Combination or Oily. I use the Tatcha Silk Canvas on the majority of my brides, and the Milk Makeup Primer has amazing reviews, plus it’s rumoured Beyonce has been wearing it for her performances—and you know she can work up a sweat dancing on stage!
I’ve also been loving skin tints and bb creams when prepping for a warm day. Look for formulas that claim to have “all-day wear” or “16-24 hour staying power” and that say they’re waterproof or water-resistant. Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Sheer Long Wear Makeup has an SPF 19, and the formula is made to resist sweat and humidity. If you’re someone who needs more coverage, you can always enlist the big sister to this formula, the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Foundation, which has equal staying power but also covers blemishes and discoloration. Pro tip: a sunkissed glow can be an instant confidence booster, beauties! I also find if I cheat my tan a bit, I need to wear less face makeup. Try St. Tropez’s Luxe Tan Tonic Drops if you’re looking to add a little faux glow to your routine. Mix a few drops into your PM moisturizer and apply in the evenings before bed to wake up tanned and glowing.
Getting a flattering flush that lasts
Blush presents a particular challenge during these balmy summer months. Powder blush can get streaky from sweat, while cream blush can slip and slide around your face. One pro tip is opting for a liquid blush that will dry down to more of a long-wear, water-resistant stain. A cult favourite is the Nars Orgasm liquid blush.
Another pro trick is to use your long-wear matte waterproof liquid lipsticks as a blush. Apply with a brush or even your fingers, and then blend quickly since these formulas are meant to dry down and set quickly–as they do on the lips. My personal fave is the shade Adorned from the Fancy Face Lady Luck Lip Kit. I used this on my recent vacation in Greece a lot!
Brows, Eyeliner and Mascara
No one likes a brow that’s fallen off, right, beauties? I’d highly recommend enlisting a brow pencil that is water-resistant, sweat-proof, and smudge-proof, as well as a brow gel with a long-wear formula. And don’t bother with brow powder in the heat–it just won’t last the test of time in the heat. My go-to’s are our Shape Me Up Retractable Pencils and Browmance Brow Gel.
My all-time fave eyeliner of the moment is by KVD Beauty, and it’s called the Tattoo Pencil Liner in the shade Axinite Brown. I love this pencil because you never have to sharpen it (twist up = big win), and it both promises and delivers all-day wear.
Normally I stay away from waterproof mascaras to help save my lashes, but when it’s hot and sweaty outside, I enlist one of my fave waterproof formulas to avoid those dreaded raccoon eyes. My top picks are Milk Makeup’s Kush Waterproof Mascara and the Too Faced Better Than Sex Waterproof Mascara. A lot of waterproof mascaras can make lashes look dry and brittle, but these formulas keep your lashes nourished and looking voluminous while still being water-resistant. Pro tip: If you’re really not a waterproof fan, apply waterproof mascara only to your bottom lashes to avoid excess smudging under your eyes, and then apply your regular mascara on the top for easier removal.
My rule of thumb in the heat: keep the lips uncomplicated. A nice pink-toned or coral lip gloss like our Lip Glaze in Summer Spritz is moisturizing and can easily be applied throughout the day whether you’re sitting poolside or at the beach.
The one product every beauty needs
If I could recommend one product every beauty needs on hand in this heat, it would be a translucent blotting powder! It’s perfect for setting your makeup after your beauty routine, as well as touching up on the go! Though if you ever find yourself in a bind without blotting powder on hand, you can use a tissue and blot off the excess oil and sweat–but always blot, beauties, never rub!
